Have you heard of Meridian lines? Here’s why they’re important.

Our new treatment menu features massages that focus on the meridian lines in our body, but exactly what are they and why do we do this? Find out below!

What is a ‘meridian’?

Meridians are energy lines that map the entire body running all the way from the base of the feet to the crown of the head. There are twelve major meridians that run on each side of the body, one side mirroring the other.

Each corresponds to an internal organ and each organ has its own physiological and invisible energy functions that connect to the greater meridian network in the body. These energy lines or meridians transmit information from the organs to the rest of the system and like little energy giving pathways they communicate and coordinate the body keeping it balanced and regulating in all its natural functions.

Sometimes these lines can become stagnant during times of physical and emotional stress.

What happens when meridians are stagnant?

Meridians can become blocked or communication through the meridians can become stagnant usually due to stress, illness and poor lifestyle habits. This can wreak havoc to the meridian flow and therefore dysregulate the whole system resulting in illness and chronic pain .

How does meridian massage and acupressure help?

According to TCM, as long as you keep healthy Qi flowing freely through your meridians your organs work in harmony and your body remains healthy. This is why we use different massage techniques in our organic massages such as compressions, thumbing and pressure points along these lines to release blocked tension, helping the body to recalibrate and release back into natural flow.

What treatments include focus on the meridian lines?

New additions to our treatment menu; Contour and Pacific both focus on releasing tension and blocked energy through the meridian lines.

Book in for a massage this week to help relieve tension and stress in your body. Located in our tranquil Queenslander located in Mudgeeraba, you will feel bliss as soon as you walk through our doors.

“What are meridians of the body? And are meridian lines real?” are questions newcomers to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) often ask. From the western perspective, if something can’t be proven, it’s disregarded. Here’s how both TCM and modern science validate energy channels….

Can it really be that we have a network of pathways that transport energy throughout our body? Is this microscopic pipeline really responsible for our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being? And can we really correct imbalances in our bodies using herbs as well as stimulating points with needles that coincide with these pathways?

Ancient cultures believed in these pathways and did indeed fix imbalances by adjusting the amount of energy that flows through these energy pipelines within the body.

The ancient Siamese (Thai) culture called them ‘sen’ lines. The ancient yogis who established Ayurvedic medicine referred to these energy pathways as ‘nadis.’ And traditional Japanese, Tibetan, and Chinese physicians called them ‘channels’ or ‘vessels.’ Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners also referred to them as what can be translated as the now-popular term ‘meridians.’ It’s likely every ancient society that developed their unique healing philosophy had a term synonymous with ‘meridian.’

What are meridians?

A basic TCM definition of the meridians of the body is that they are a network of ‘energy channels’. You’ve probably seen an anatomical chart of meridian points in an acupuncturist’s treatment room, or other type of healer. When you take a look at this chart, it appears that these meridian lines are superficial, appearing just below the skin. Meridians can go much deeper than skin surface, as we’ll come back to in a bit.

Meridian lines are thought to connect the surface of the body with the internal organs. As long as Qi (energy) can flow through these energy channels in the Goldilocks zone (not too little and not too much), disease can be averted.

Every organ and major region in the body needs energy in order to function. Energy comes from the nutrients we eat from food, and from free-flowing blood. There are six pairs of meridians (12 total major meridians), each affecting a corresponding Yin/Yang organ.

Can Science Prove Meridians of the Body?

Long before Benjamin Franklin experimented with electricity (his kite flying experiment is probably more myth than reality; he would have likely died from electrocution), ancient Chinese physicians knew that the human body contains charged particles. Even 2,000 years ago, Chinese medicine doctors likely knew that the body’s vessels could store and produce electrical charges to provide electricity. They may have not been familiar with ‘ATP’ or Adenosine Triphosphate, which is what glucose (blood sugar) breaks down into to provide us with energy. However, it seems they were well aware of the full physiological workings of nerves, capillaries, blood vessels, arteries and veins.

As doctor of veterinary medicine, Narda Robinson, points out in Veterinary Practice News, acupuncturists in ancient China were using meridians to activate what modern-day researchers would use to generate nerve or neuronal function.

Robinson states, “These neural centers process the incoming signals and adjust endogenous regulation that results in improved circulation and organ function, analgesia, muscle relaxation, and normalized immune function, among other effects.”

Just like the acupuncturists of many centuries ago, a modern medical acupuncturist studies the nerve connections and “selects sites according to the desired neuromodulatory outcomes,” says Robinson, adding, “Medical researchers and physiologists are now in agreement that the peripheral and central nervous systems constitute the most rational basis for defining meridians.”

How are Meridian Lines of the Body Researched?

Research from China published in the Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena, concluded acupuncture points have a higher density of microvessels. In addition, they also contain a large amount of involuted microvascular structures. The non-acupuncture points did not exhibit these properties.*

In the study the researchers observe specific acupuncture points. These points reveal microvascular densities with two branches existing around thick blood vessels. These points contain fine structures with more large blood vessels that are significantly larger in size. The researchers also determined that meridian (acupuncture) points possess a higher density of vascularization of vessels.

Modern research has provided significant proof that acupuncture meridians are visceral. In fact, this research employs several techniques, including MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), infrared imaging, LCD thermal photography, ultrasound and other CT imaging methods. Other studies, such as this one published in Bioelectromagnetics, define meridian lines as “special conduits for electrical signals.“

Could it be that modern science has recently confirmed what the ancients knew all along?

You may have heard this mentioned in a health, holistic or medical context, but what actually are the body’s meridian lines? To put it simply they are the energy network of the body; the lines are the channels by which our energy flows, thus transporting said energy throughout the body.

Our life energy – also known as Chi or Qi – distributed by these channels is not exactly a physical system like the circulatory system, it is better understood as being a process as opposed to a structure. This process is studied by Chinese medicine practitioners as intently as a western doctor would have to study the anatomy of the human body.

Any blockages in this system may be caused by stress, bad diet, drug or alcohol abuse, injury, trauma, etc. and can be related to the cause of all health issues. It is strongly believed that this energy flow conditions our overall existence; how we think, how we feel, how our body moves. Everything.

Throughout the body lies many ‘Yin’ and ‘Yang’ pairs; each Yin organ is paired with a Yang organ for example.

Primary Yin Channels:

  • Arm Tai Yin channel corresponds to the Lung
  • Leg Tai Yin channel corresponds to the Spleen
  • Arm Shao Yin channel corresponds to the Heart
  • Leg Shao Yin corresponds to the Kidney
  • Arm Jue Yin corresponds to the Pericardium
  • Leg Jue Yin corresponds to the Liver

Primary Yang Channels:

  • Arm Yang Ming corresponds to the Large Intestine
  • Leg Yang Ming corresponds to the Stomach
  • Arm Tai Yang corresponds to the Small Intestine
  • Leg Tai Yang corresponds to the Bladder
  • Arm Shao Yang corresponds to the San Jiao
  • Leg Shao Yang Channel corresponds to the Gall Bladder

Primary Yang Channels:

  • Arm Yang Ming corresponds to the Large Intestine
  • Leg Yang Ming corresponds to the Stomach
  • Arm Tai Yang corresponds to the Small Intestine
  • Leg Tai Yang corresponds to the Bladder
  • Arm Shao Yang corresponds to the San Jiao
  • Leg Shao Yang Channel corresponds to the Gall Bladder

The energy flows through these twelve regular meridian channels in the following rhythm:

  1. From the chest area via the three arm Yin channels – lung, pericardium, heart – to the hands.
  2. From here we connect with the three paired arm Yang channels – large intestine, San Jiao, small intestine – and flow up to the head.
  3. From the head we connect to three corresponding leg Yang channels – stomach, gall bladder, bladder – and flow to the feet.
  4. From the feet we connect with the corresponding leg Yin channels – spleen, liver, kidney – and flow back to the chest to complete the energy circle.

meridianThe arm and leg channels of the same name communicate with one another within Chinese medicine. Therefore if there is an issue with a particular channel or organ, these problems can be addressed by treating various points on the corresponding partner.

As well as the twelve primary channels there are also the ‘Extraordinary Meridians’. These have specific functions yet are not linked directly to the organ channels, though they do provide further connections between them. They act as reservoirs for energy and blood regulated as and when required by the primary channels.

  • they circulate jing or ‘essence’ around the body because they have a strong connection with the kidneys
  • they help circulate the defensive Wei Qi over the trunk of the body and, as such, play an important role in maintaining good health
  • the meridian system of the human body is a delicate, yet intricate web of interconnecting energy lines. If a person masters an understanding of this meridian system they will know the secrets of the flow of Qi energy in the body.

Our body needs to be at peace, if you like, to be in a state of harmonious balance within its Yin and Yang forces. If balance is disrupted and becomes off kilter then illness can manifest. In order to utilise acupuncture for healing a doctor must know exactly where to access the energy points and release any blockages or surplus energy which may be causing an imbalance. Meridian massage therapy and Acupressure are also methods in which to restore this essential equilibrium and therefore aid good health.

As well as physical health there is a demonstrable link between the Meridians and our emotional well being. There are psychotherapeutic treatments, psychotherapies and counselling techniques whereby repressed emotional trauma can be alleviated by tapping into the Meridian flow of the body.

The Upper Body Meridians

HOMEYINSIGHTSTHE UPPER BODY MERIDIANS

There are six meridians that begin or end in the fingers of the hands. They all pass through the shoulder or armpit. The Yin Yoga practice does not often target these lines. [1] The six upper body meridians are the Heart, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Lung, Pericardium, and San Jiao.

The Heart Meridian

The three branches of the Heart meridian begin in the heart. One branch flows downward through the diaphragm to meet the small intestines. Another rises up alongside the throat and ends in the lower eye. The third runs across the chest, through the lungs, and comes out through the armpit. It flows along the midline of the inside upper arm, through the inner elbow, along the midline of the inner lower arm, until it crosses the wrist and palm, before ending in the inside tip of the little finger where it connects to the Small Intestine meridian.

Disorders of the heart and chest such as palpitations, pain, insomnia, night sweats, and mental problems may signal problems with the Heart meridian.

The Small Intestine Meridian

Starting where the Heart meridian ends, the Small Intestine meridian begins at the outer tip of the little finger. It runs along the back edge of the hand, through the wrist, upward along the outer forearm and upper arm, to the shoulder. After circling the back of the shoulder, it meets the Governor Vessel meridian. Here it branches, with one branch going inside the body and descending through the heart, diaphragm, and stomach before ending in the small intestine. Another branch ascends along the side of the neck to the cheek and outer corner of the eye from where it then goes to the ear. Another small branch leaves the cheek to run to the inner eye where it meets the Urinary Bladder meridian.

Disharmony in the Small Intestine meridian may be indicated by ear, eye, or stomach problems such as deafness, pain in the lower abdomen, or pain in the shoulders or neck.

The Lung Meridian

The Lung meridian begins inside the belly just above the navel, and drops down to the large intestines. From here it comes back up through the diaphragm and connects to the stomach. It ascends through the lungs and follows the throat before coming to the front surface of the shoulder from under the clavicle. From here it runs along the outer, thumb side (medial/radial) of the upper arm and the front (anterior) of the lower arm. It crosses the wrist and ends at the outer tip of the thumb. A small branch goes from the wrist to the tip of the index finger, where it connects to the Large Intestine meridian.

Respiratory problems like coughs, asthma, and chest pains may signify Lung meridian dysfunction. Extreme and persistent sadness and grief may also indicate problems here.

The Large Intestine Meridian

Beginning at the tip of the index finger, the Large Intestine meridian runs between the thumb and forefinger and along the outside (lateral side) of the arm. It comes over the outside top of the shoulder and along the back of the shoulder blades to the spine. Here it branches, with one branch descending through the lungs, diaphragm, and the large intestines. The second branch ascends along the neck and the lower cheek, and enters the lower gum, circling the lower teeth. On the outside, this line also circles the upper lips, crosses under the nose and rises up to join the Stomach meridian.

Problems in the mouth, teeth, nose, and throat such as toothaches and sore throats, as well as problems with the neck and shoulders, may indicate disharmony of the Large Intestine meridian.

The Pericardium Meridian

The pericardium covers the heart and is considered in Chinese medicine to be an organ function of its own. The Pericardium meridian begins in the chest and connects to the pericardium. From here it moves down the chest, connecting the three sections of the San Jiao meridian. Another branch moves horizontally across the chest, coming to the surface of the ribs, moves up and around the armpit and down the front of the bicep and forearm to the palm, and ends at the tip of the middle finger. A small branch leads from the palm to the tip of the ring finger where it connects to the San Jiao meridian.

Pain in the heart area, poor circulation, some stomach problems, and mental problems may indicate disharmony of the Pericardium meridian.

The San Jiao Meridian

The San Jiao meridian is often called the “Triple Burner” or “Triple Energizer.” It begins in the ring finger where the Pericardium meridian ends. It runs over the back of the hand, the wrist, and lower arm. It passes the outer point of the elbow and the back (lateral) of the upper arm to the back (posterior) shoulder. From here it comes over the shoulder to the front of the body and enters the chest beneath the sternum. Here it branches, with the main branch running to the pericardium and continuing down through the diaphragm to the three burners: upper, middle and lower. The second branch ascends

The Extra Meridians

HOMEYINSIGHTSTHE EXTRA MERIDIANS

As we have just seen, the meridian system is made up of the lines connecting the five yin and six yang organs plus the pericardium. Beyond these twelve, there are eight additional meridians that a Chinese doctor must know. These remaining eight are beyond our scope; however, we will visit the two most important: the Governor Vessel and the Conception Vessel meridians. These two are considered important because they have acupuncture points separate from those on any of the other twelve main meridians. All the other extra meridians share points with the main meridians.

The Governor Vessel

Dr. Motoyama associates the Governor Vessel with the sushumna nadi. It begins within the lower belly and splits in three. Two smaller branches ascend to connect to each kidney. The third, and main branch descends to the perineum where it enters the tip of the spinal chord and then rises up the spine to the brain. This branch comes over the top of the skull, down the middle of the forehead and nose, and terminates in the upper gum. Dr. Motoyama recommends the practice of nadi shodana to purify this meridian. [1]

The Conception Vessel

This meridian also begins in the lower abdomen next to the Governor Vessel. It has only one branch and it too descends to the perineum. Emerging from the muladhara (halfway between the anus and the “vegetables”), it ascends along the front midline of the body through the neck and chin to the mouth. At the mouth it splits and goes around the lips before sending branches to the lower eyes.

The Governor Vessel and Conception Vessel run along the front and back of the torso. These lines also contain the front and back of each chakra. When we breathe and draw energy up the Governor Vessel and down the Conception Vessel, we are completing the Microcosmic Orbit, which will be discussed in detail in Chapter 15: Moving Energy.
